First, from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, it's the Weekly World News interview with Sam and Dean Winchester. There are spoilers for the next episode, but I read it anyway, because it's a brilliant idea.

And then, via [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, [livejournal.com profile] kindkit responded to that post I made about m/m sexuality in Rome and in Rome. I don't think she's wrong in general, but I still don't see Pullo/Vorenus.

A bit of repetition caught in my ear Thursday night, and I thought it was just about enough to hang a drabble on.

Spoilers for 2x14, Born under a Bad Sign
100 words
Rated PG

Bobby calls them first, now... )

As an aside, I am amused to note that I played with the idea of I should cut this for spoilers, too, I think )

This is mostly spec -- and I am pretty much entirely unspoiled, so please do not be spoiling me in comments. I don't care if I'm right or wrong, at least not right now.

a little more about Born under a Bad Sign )

...by other people, anyway. I have no thoughts of my own, but I did have a lot of open tabs. So here are some further comments on the episode:

[livejournal.com profile] hossgal talks about Religion in the SPNverse, on the Winchesters and their different ways of relating to the Deity. Both boys, I think, make the mistake of over-personalizing their struggles, of seeing redemption (or grace) as something which is escaping them, and them alone, instead of being part of the human condition.

[livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka talks about Sam, Dean and belief, which I love for this particular line: Dean is not the type to be impressed by talk of "mysterious ways" or "God's master plan." As far as he's concerned, if there's a Cosmic Good out there, it's not doing it's damn job. Unlike Sam, who's looking for a loving redeemer, Dean is looking for a fellow smiter of evil. And unlike Sam, who still hopes, Dean is pretty much resigned to having to do all the smiting himself. But he's not happy about it.

[livejournal.com profile] dodger_winslow has a post on Sam, Dean and the concept of the true believer. I'm not sure I understand it, but I haven't had much time to think about it.

[livejournal.com profile] rez_lo points out that the real issue isn't faith but error: the false comfort of easy judgment and its potentially deadly consequences; how important it is to read the signs correctly, to question orthodoxy of all kinds, examine and re-examine appearances and assumptions, to get the killing and dying right.

[livejournal.com profile] elishavah thinks about the difference between religion and Religion, and the way Sam and Dean's beliefs and backgrounds figure in the larger SPN universe.

The posts I mentioned back on Friday are also good, and there are interesting comments on all these posts, as well.

About those SPN directors-cut scenes...

one or two things )
vaznetti: (men in black)
So I almost have thoughts about the larger structure of the episode, but there's mostly just the usual mess of commentary under the cut.

spoilers under here )

Also, a totally appropriate icon!

This is not the meta I'm supposed to be writing, but it is something I've meant to write for a while.

I've said a few times that while Sam and Dean may well be Greek, John Winchester is a Roman through-and-through. And then I forget that other people might not know exactly what I mean by that, so here it is.

husbands and wives )

paternal power )

war, duty and love )

So yes, a Roman through and through, or at least, a particular kind of Roman: the kind of Roman the Romans liked to think they were. No wonder I fell hard for the character.

So in case you missed it, [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 and I were playing with some ideas about a gender-swap (genderswitch?) AU, and wrote a couple snippets. Then she wrote another snippet, set a few years later. And last night I wrote this, which is part of how we get from A to B.

---

It starts with a phone call... )

---

I've never been all that interested in AUs, but what I kind of like about this one is how changing one thing might change everything else -- obviously the relationships here aren't quite the same as the relationships we see in the show -- but the characters are still, at the core, who they always were.

a few preliminary thoughts on Hunted )

Spoilers under the cut.

New SPN! Croatoan! spoilers and profanity )

And on a mostly unrelated note that I hope will amuse a handful of you, I leave you with the following thought, because I have been re-reading McKillip. John Winchester and Mathom of An -- separated at birth?
vaznetti: (men in black)
Things to do by tomorrow morning:

Grade 22 first-year essays (only 7 left!)
Grade 12 second-year exams
Write final exam for first-year survey
Grade 2 leftover second-year papers

In other news, I think my "Oh, Dean" response is broken; every now and then, instead of thinking "Oh, Dean," I find myself thinking, "Dean, stop being such a damned martyr." In a fandom in which "Oh, Dean" is a primary form of communication, this is going to be a problem. At least so far it's only happening in fanfic.

Yep. Still grumpy. Speaking of people who need to get over themselves!

vaznetti: (perspective)
I started my holiday shopping yesterday; the best thing so far was a leather overnight bag (or maybe gigantic handbag?) which I think my sister in law will be able to use as a briefcase of some kind. Or as an overnight bag. It was so nice (and such a good buy!) that I'm tempted to go back and buy one for myself, even though I have exactly zero need for a really nice large leather bag, and I already bought myself a skirt and sweater and cute little hat while I was supposedly shopping for gifts for other people. But it was so reasonable, too!

This kind of thing is why I suspect I'm not a good person. I'm paying for it with a horrible, horrible sore throat -- I'm in actual pain here, and just hope that it'll be better in time for me to lecture tomorrow. I think the cold is moving into my nose, which may be a sign of progress.

In the meantime, I have been reading crossovers, mostly so you don't have to. There was a link last week on [livejournal.com profile] sn_crossovers to a SPN/HP crossover with a premise I couldn't resist: it's a DADA story, and you only have three guesses )
vaznetti: (god will dance for john)
There's been some interesting discussion of the metaphysics of the SPN universe over on [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 and [livejournal.com profile] veejane's journals (here and here), some of which has gone right over my head and some of which has made me think about good and evil in that universe. This is one possible structure; it's also possible that the universe is more dualistic than I'm suggesting here.

good, evil, free will and mercy )
vaznetti: (john is leaving)
I changed the channel just in time to see the ugliest ring in the world on Smallville. Enough of that. Let's go on to my preliminary comments on this week's SPN.

Crossroad Blues )

Also, I have ER on in the background: has anyone else noticed that they're doing a subplot with Bloody Mary and children who fight demons? or something like that?
vaznetti: (teacher)
Free time during the day let me track down a bunch of random links. This one illustrates the dangers of SPN for me -- it's just on the verge of dealing with material I could get away with working on or once worked on. So in the course of doing something else entirely, I came across this site, which I think will probably not be wildly useful to anyone but which I can happily forsee spending many hours browsing through: Esoterica, an online scholarly journal for the interdisciplinary study of the western esoteric tradition. Look at the table of contents! Look at the resource links (OK, actually they are not so great)! Look at the archival works printed in the early editions of the journal! It is so neat!

Is it time for SPN yet?
vaznetti: (brothers)
Thursday is finally here! Huzzah! And last night I dreamed about the show, as well: some kind of second-season AU where my dream has spoilers, I guess )
