vaznetti: (lost in the wash)
I had an excellent [community profile] yuletide -- I received a lovely story and both of the pieces I wrote were well-received. AND I finally persuaded [personal profile] aceofkittens to take part, so I had someone to chat about the exchange with!

My assignment was The View from the Aventine (3097 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Falco Series - Lindsey Davis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Marcus Didius Falco/Helena Justina
Characters: Marcus Didius Falco, Helena Justina
Additional Tags: historical fiction - Freeform, Flavian History
Summary: From all the way up here, you might almost think you could escape Rome. Falco and Helena at two turning-points, at either end of a decade.

I was really pleased by how much feedback this received, because I honestly thought no one but me and my recipient remembered the series! I realised as I reread a lot of the books that although this series has a lot of things that drive me crazy in other historical fiction canons (misuse of "plebeian" and "patrician"! not caring about how Roman nomenclature works!), I really don't care because I'm too fond of the series and the whole setup of the hardboiled private eye who can't actually be a loner because everywhere he goes he runs into his sisters/parents/nieces and nephews/inlaws.

I also wrote a treat: The Place of Birds (2378 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin, Piranesi - Susanna Clarke
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Penthe (Earthsea), The House (Piranesi)
Additional Tags: also a lot of birds, Magic, Metamorphosis, Learning to Fly, Crossover, Yuletide Treat
Summary: In the wreckage of the Tombs, Penthe finds her way to the House, and to her own power.

I started about three stories about Penthe, and this was the one which developed legs, despite -- as the recipient pointed out -- the obvious fact that Penthe and The House are a really bad match for each other. And yet I'm quite pleased with how I managed my way through that problem here.

I've been away since the 30th so I still have a lot of stories in the collection to comment on, as well.

New Fic!

Oct. 22nd, 2017 10:54 am
vaznetti: (crossovers! yay!)
SO here I am, posting new fic for the first time in years. I had an excellent [community profile] crossovering exchange. I wrote TWO stories, and I received something really amazing in return. First, my gift:

a wolf age ere the world falls (10031 words) by wnnbdarklord
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Avengers (Marvel Movies), A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor (Marvel), Bran Stark, Ned Stark, Lyanna Stark, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Background & Cameo Characters
Additional Tags: Crossover, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Infinity Gems, Memory Alteration, Memory Loss, Time Skips, Background Character Death, Canonical Character Death, references to canon typical violence and sexual assault
Summary:
The boy in the weirwood dreams of another world, where heroes exist that can help save them all. He reaches through and pulls. Blue light fills him as the universe tears apart. The world changes.

---

An MCU/ASoIaF crossover where the Avengers are pulled into Westeros to help with their White Walker problem. Except they get overshot and get sent farther back than intended. What else is Tony Stark going to do but build his way out?

I have wanted some version of this crossover for years, and this was wonderful beyond my wildest dreams. Everyone in it is perfect, especially Tony, but really, everyone. It is perfect!

Meanwhile, I wrote a SPN/SW story as my assignment, which was a lot of fun, but also challenging because I've never written SW (barring some 30-year old Mary Sue drawerfic) and it's been a long time since I've written SPN, and I really didn't want this to be like the last time I wrote Winchesters in Space. Also, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that in this universe Sam and Dean would name their spaceship Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell.

Paved with Bad Intentions (The Road out of Hell) (7815 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Wars Original Trilogy, Supernatural
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sam Winchester, Han Solo, Dean Winchester, Chewbacca (Star Wars)
Additional Tags: Crossover, Action/Adventure, Pre-Star Wars: A New Hope, SPN S3
Summary: Sam finds a way to save Dean from Hell; it involves sending them both to a galaxy far far away. Set in SPN Season 3, and some time before ANH.

I also wrote a very last-minute treat crossing over Game of Thrones and the Vorkosigan books, which in the way of last-minute treats was very well received, and now I might have to write more of it.

Winterfell Tales (2615 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Game of Thrones (TV), Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ekaterin Vorsoisson Vorkosigan/Miles Vorkosigan
Characters: Miles Vorkosigan, Ekaterin Vorsoisson Vorkosigan, Sansa Stark, Armsman Roic, Tyrion Lannister
Additional Tags: Crossover, crossovering treat, Game of Thrones spoilers
Summary: It's like something out of an old story, Miles thinks: a Betan's idea of what Barrayar was like.
vaznetti: Arya and Nymeria, from A Game of Thrones (when the wolf comes home)
I wrote two stories this year, both for canons that are near and dear to my heart.

First was a Lymond Chronicles story set post series:

Turn of Winter (4197 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Lymond Chronicles - Dorothy Dunnett
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Francis Crawford, Jerott Blyth, Philippa Somerville
Summary:

After the 1565 siege of Malta, Jerott Blyth returns to Scotland.

This story was so hard to write, because I find the canon really intimidating, and the request set me pretty squarely into the middle of it. I'm not sure that I really managed to avoid "optional details are optional" here, but I did try to give a glimpse of Francis, Philippa and Jerott after the events of the series.

Also, the 1560s were not a great decade for Scotland, you know?

Then I wrote a treat for [livejournal.com profile] selenak. I knew as soon as I saw the prompt that I wanted to write this story, but I had to get my assignment written first, and that went slowly, so I basically wrote this in about 24 hours, and played incredibly fast and loose with the first five months of 49 BCE. Not that anyone but me cares about that, I suspect. It probably should have historical notes, but when I started to write them it became clear that they would end up longer than the story itself, so if you have any questions, just ask them.

Scenes from something which is certainly not a friendship (3192 words) by Vaznetti
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lesbia | Clodia, Terentia Ciceronis, Livia Drusilla
Summary:

Clodia and Terentia, through the 40s.

At first I assumed that anyone who knows me would know that I'd written this, and then I realized that the only people who I talk to about this sort of thing are my students, and if any of them are doing Yuletide I really don't want to know about it.

Of course, the whole idea of a friendship between Terentia and Clodia is so unlikely -- Clodia did something to attack Terentia during Cicero's exile, and then there's the Pro Caelio, and the story in Plutarch that Terentia goaded Cicero to attack Clodius because she was jealous of Clodia (I think? It's been so long since I read the Plutarch), and Clodia's daughter with Metella had an affair with Dolabella while he was still married to Tullia... But hey, that's part of the fun of writing! I couldn't quite manage to get Julia in, although if the story had continued we would have had Terentia seeing Clodia in Julia, just as Clodia sees Terentia in Livia. Actually, the story might have expanded to include young Marcus, and the younger Clodia (Clodia's niece, the one who was briefly married to Octavian), and Scribonia. And Attica and Agrippa, and Vipsania... and if I ever do write a novel, [livejournal.com profile] selenak, it will be all your fault.
vaznetti: (things are looking up)
I had a successful Yuletide, I think -- I received a really neat story for the fandom I was really not expecting to get:

Siempre Cambiando, Nunca Cambiando (9402 words) by faviconLlwyden ferch Gyfrinach
Fandom: Hotel California - Fandom
Rating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: The Narrator, The Woman, The Captain, the Nightman
Summary:

"...Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
You can find it here..."

I asked for horror in my request, but sort of figured that anyone who was going to write the prompt would end up going for comedy instead. But Llwyden didn't! And the result was amazing!

* * *

I wrote a story for [personal profile] ellia:

Let our weakness speak (2303 words) by faviconVaznetti
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Harry Pearce, Ruth Evershed
Summary:

There is no life outside the Grid. (Harry and Ruth, post season 9)

I was really happy to get the prompt I did; it was something I had been thinking about anyway. It ended up being more of a rush job than it should have been, but I think it turned out all right in the end. A few people read it and liked it, and that's always nice.

This brings my total for 2010 up to two stories! The other was also a new fandom -- and a rather intimidating one, because I am just never going to be up on Who canon, even recent canon:

In the blank space between the trenches (G, River Song, spoilers for 5x13).

Oddly, neither was a crossover, although there ought to be lots and lots of crossovers with River Song in them. Perhaps there should also be lots of crossovers with Harry and Ruth in them, as well. I started a story about Ruth and Arvin Sloane, earlier in the season.

* * *

Other than that, I'm not sure I had a year in fandom -- I certainly don't have "a fandom" and am not sure when I'll be getting one. I find it hard to participate when I'm not watching the US shows at the same time as the majority of my flist -- I don't see the point of writing up comments, and I don't want to go hunt down what other people have said when I can read them safely. And yet I really, really hate to watch downloaded tv -- even if I go ahead and acquire an episode, I won't watch it. But by the time I have anything to say about the British shows, their season is over! And in general, if I do have anything to say about them, I can say it to my husband -- and I have very little faith that if I did write episode comments, anyone would read them. I just don't have the sense that any of the people still reading this journal care that much.

Sorry, that came out sort of weird. On the positive side, Primeval is coming back tonight! And as far as I can tell from the ads on tv, they seem to have got rid of most of the stuff I didn't like about the last season.

Guys! It's been more than two years since I wrote anything! And I should have sent this off to a beta, but I wasn't sure that I would ever get around to posting it if I took the time to do so.
vaznetti: (sarah has a big gun)
Like others on my friends list, I seem to be toying with a new fandom. So here's a character study, I suppose, for Sarah Connor.

Double Vision

PG, Sarah Connor, no spoilers beyond the concept
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hossgal for beta-reading

I wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] eid_fic, a community set up to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, which occurs this weekend, by writing stories about Muslim characters. I am 100% behind the notion that writing is often the best response to a sense of exclusion in fandom, and the challenge gave me the opportunity to write about a character I've wanted to play with for a while. I recommend the community highly; you can find out more about it here.

Title: House of Shadows
Author: Vanzetti ([livejournal.com profile] vaznetti)

Summary: The past weighs heavy on Duncan MacLeod, and the future on John Winchester.
Post-ep for SPN 1x 16, "Shadow."
Author's notes: Many thanks to Rhi and Rez for beta-reading and hand-holding. The title comes from Townes van Zandt, "High, Low and In Between." Freakishly appropriate lyrics here.

Comments very welcome; part of me thinks I'm crazy for posting this on a Thursday, but it's done, so here it is.
vaznetti: (wes+gun (base by alanna))
I almost forgot I had this icon.

Long long ago, [livejournal.com profile] hossgal asked for Bobby (SPN) and Wesley (AtS) in that great crossover meme. And I was thinking about it off and on, and finally came up with this post-AHBL snippet.

whiff of sulfur )

I had other thoughts, but who knows what they might have been. And oh, how can summer be over already?
vaznetti: (crossovers yay!)
Earlier lists of five here (SPN, Jericho), here (SPN, XF) and here (Primeval).

And finally... for [livejournal.com profile] celli and [livejournal.com profile] camille_is_here, Five crossovers the Winchesters didn't know they were in. (Alias, Jericho, Primeval, Angel, The Riddle-Master of Hed)

five crossovers, under the cut -- mostly gen, mostly Sam and Dean. )

I don't think I've ever needed this many tags on a post!

I could not make this a proper drabble, but at 155 words, it might be an old XF drabble. Consider this a reassertion of the appropriate historical order; there are spoilers for Rome 2x08, although it is set some time after that episode.

Title: Whip Hand

Did I do any of the writing I ought to be doing on stories in progress this weekend? Sadly, not so much. Instead I wrote two and a half post-eps for "Home," of which this is the first.

Title: The recovery of a sick man
by Vanzetti
G, SPN/Sandman (post-ep for Home)
Summary: Mary has no fear of death.
c. 400 words, no beta

Mary stands still. )

Considering that this is the fourth SPN crossover with Death I've started, and the first I've finished... I don't know what that says about me, actually. And even this is more a way of playing with a few ideas than a story.
vaznetti: (john is a dork)
So this morning I posted a serious story about Missouri Mosely. Now I am posting a somewhat different story, with Missouri in it. I want to say up front that this was not my idea -- I actually came across it a couple days ago via friendsfriends, and have no idea whose it was. If any of you remember, could you drop me a line so that I can let her know and apologize for stealing her really excellent idea for crackfic?

Untitled SPN/GA crossover. Crack. Resfic. Did I mention the crack?

Adele Webber has a very good reason for keeping Richard out of the house )

I was hoping this would be funnier, actually. But now I've posted it, and can go watch Rome. Yay!

The Yuletide names are up, and it's time for the reveal. Here's mine.

Title: My hands remember hers
Author: Vanzetti
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] random_flores, for Yuletide 2006
Fandom: Deadwood
Pairing: Joanie Stubbs/Calamity Jane
R for language, set post S3, but with no real spoilers
Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rez_lo for beta-reading in the face of my many insecurities. The errors of course are all mine.
Summary: Snow in Deadwood, December 23rd: a house turns inside-out, Joanie decorates and Jane goes for a walk.

There's some kind of crud in Jane's eyes, sticking them closed... )

On a final yuletide-related note, I want everyone to know how much I love [livejournal.com profile] elishavah, because she is awesome beyond the telling of it.

Title: Iron Points North

Fandom: Angel

Summary: Fred needs to be somewhere else.

It's only California. Not Europe, or the moon. )

Small print: Joss, ME, WB own it. All mistakes are my own; I know nothing about physics. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jennyo for organizing the ficathon and to [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight for providing a neat prompt. I hope you like it.
vaznetti: (albatross)
As the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide author names are now up I can now claim the story that I wrote, Theseus and Ariadne Try Again, an Indiana Jones story with Nazis and snake goddesses and Marion Ravenwood. There were times, as I wrote, that I worried that the story was too much like canon, and that I was recycling story elements I'd used before here and there, but I'm cautiously pleased with the final result. It was a blast to write, too.

Some of the people who sent me feedback on it are on my friends list -- did any of you guess that it was mine? Or at least consider it a possibility? I have to admit that with so many Yuletide stories I would never be able to make any sort of guess at all.

I received just the kind of story I wanted, as well. Against the company of heaven, by [livejournal.com profile] lakester, may well be the only piece of fanfic out there for Julian May's Exiles Saga and Galactic Milieu novels, and it's very good indeed. And all about Marc! You know how you sometimes feel that your Yuletide author has read your mind? That's exactly how I feel about this story. There's a scene between Marc and Jon that's just perfect.

And finally, a single recommendation. The Blest Surprize, by Afrai ([livejournal.com profile] bravecows) is a Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell story with a crossover to the Aubrey and Maturin novels. It's a lovely look at Arabella Strange in the kingdom of Lost-hope, and the unexpected solace she finds there. Beautifully written. This is the sort of story Yuletide is all about.

ETA with a big fat "Duh!": I would also like to thank [livejournal.com profile] rez_lo and [livejournal.com profile] gryphonrhi for early hand-holding and Rhi, again, for last-minute beta reading, and [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa for providing the German dialogue. All mistakes are mine; some of them might have been intentional.

Hrm. Another Alias plotbunny brought on by work. I consider this a bad sign: Greek lyric should not be reminding me of TV shows. Meanwhile, in the story I'm actually writing, I made the mistake of allowing Sark to talk. He's very amusing, but he will not shut up. Bastard.

I did manage to break away and write something for [livejournal.com profile] random_hundreds. An XMM/BtVS crossover, as required by this week's challenge. Set pre-series and pre-movies too, and warping canon timelines beyond repair.

Under the Skin, PG )

That probably makes no sense unless you realize that this week's crossover characters were Wolverine and Tara.

I was attacked by this crossover plotbunny this morning, so this is what I did instead of my taxes. A 24/XF crossover, set between S1 and S2 of 24 and after the end of the X-Files, starring Nina Myers and Marita Covarrubias, because I am nothing if not predictable.

And now, to work.
