OK. I had a busy week, I admit it. I haven't been paying as much attention to livejournal as I might have. But I just looked at this week's edition of [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, and wow. Was it a slow week for television or something? Where did all the wank come from? Women shouldn't write from a male pov? Or should we? Are we really about to have slash vs. het again, complete with witty observations like, "Well, it seems to me that het fic isn't very good. Of course, I don't read much of it," and decent het writers with an attachment to fandom being classified as "atypical"? And we haven't even finished talking about whether slash is gay or not!

Please tell me that there will lots and lots of new television next week, so that we will all be backing away from the stupidity.

Hon, how long have you been in fandom?? Of course they don't.

Otherwise we'd all recognize when we're starting the Same Old Flamewar, and quit it. I actively cultivate amnesia whenever I think seriously about fandom: it's the only way not to go insane.

They really don't.

And I was being good, I wasn't going to answer. Really I wasn't. but I am so fucking sick of het being trashed in HP fandom.

I didn't even go read the "slash isn't gay" things. Because I only have enough energy for so much crazy wank in my life, you know?

Hee! They did come around, didn't they?

I think now the OP is claiming it was all just tongue in cheek, which is fine, except... I think it's the kind of tongue in cheek that really isn't.

In my experience... a lot of people don't even read what they're replying to.

I think this is true because what they read isn't what the author wrote or intended or was talking about, but the invisible antagonist in the replyer's head that they're arguing with.

Someone said one little thing like person's monomaniacal obsession and so all this other stuff must also be their argument, even if none of that stuff was ever said by the person they're replying to. It is all assumed.

my response to the "slash is not gay" thing was on the lines of "sometimes somebody says something so stupid that it's not even worth addressing; and yet, it's so stupid that people feel the NEED to address its obvious stupidity. The catch-22 of wank."

sigh. thanks for being uncrazy.
