Alias 3x03 spoilers

This is only kind of a GIP. It also has Alias spoilers.
Except that really, everything I would say has been said already. I adore Lauren Reed, and her outburst. I mean, Sydney was just being Sydney--that's how she always is--but it is rude and condescending. I love her and Vaughn--they're so in love, and it's so sweet. Yes, I am a confirmed Vaughn/Reed shipper. It's love.
And this frees up Sydney for Weiss, who is so very making a move on her. Please. The book? But I loved that drunken scene at the opening, because they're just darling.
Of course, my prediction is that Syd will shoot him down. just like she shot Will down.
Sydney wants to be there when the CIA grabs Sark? Get in line, girl. I'm just saying. Even Vaughn wants a piece of that Sark action.
Like everyone else, I'm wondering if Sark could have been any more obvious with those damn photos? Because Sydney's hat and poncho getup was the worst disguise ever, which is saying something for Alias. My personal belief is that he saw her and recognized her, and leaked the information to her: remember the last time Sark was in Mexico City? He appeared slightly uncomfortable with weapons that kill lots of people from a distance. In an episode which was so completely full of references to past events, I consider the locale a hint. Plus, he knew she'd turn up in Moscow.
Well, OK, a lot of other stuff has happened since then, but still.
Meanwhile, Jack has gone off the deep end. I happen to think that Jack did once have a moral compass, but he seems to have permanently misplaced it. His insane actions re: Madagascar--risking Sydney's life to ensure that she would never trust her mother--are starting to look more like the norm and less like an aberration. Somehow, between losing Sydney, working with Irina, and getting thrown in jail, Jack has entirely forgotten that there are lines one should not cross. Don't even try to tell me he wasn't wondering whether killing Marshall might not be the simplest thing. He considered it--he just decided it wasn't necessary yet.
Of course, it turns out that Dixon and Marshall are blind as bats, because really, Sydney was very recognizable on what they had. So perhaps Jack needn't have been so worried. But I think that his protectiveness is driving him to greater and greater risks. Will there be fallout? I'd like there to be.
And finally, Crazy Uncle Arvin! I just start to cackle whenever he turns up onscreen. I do. Because he's so funny. That last line, to Vaughn? How Sloane loved watching them all squirm--that was evil, I admit. He had the cutest little evil smile on his face!
Oh, Christ. I'm findign Sloane cute. I'm going to hell.
Frankly, the Reed/Vaughn carried me through the episode and gave me a lot to like. (Although that looong, slooow scene with the champagne, between Vaughn and Syd, could have been made a lot shorter. Or cut altogether. Then we could have had more of Sark in that dinner jacket, which I for one did not get enough of.) But I agree, it felt a bit slow. I enjoyed it, but I think I want more stuff. And more Sark.
And speaking of which, am I just supposed to accept that Sark is working for the Covenant now? Are they that stupid? Trusting a guy they've just stolen 800 million from? I'm going to need some missing scenes, and possibly a major retcon, before I swallow this.
Well, I guess I had more to say than I thought. And with that, good night.

Date: 2003-10-12 11:26 pm (UTC)TV is better when those three are on it. dammit.

Date: 2003-10-13 08:53 am (UTC)The TV gods are plotting against me. I'm convinced of it. (Of course, I'm still hoping that I'll get a glimpse of these ladies, but I want them NOW, dammit. Because yes, I am three years old.)

Date: 2003-10-12 11:27 pm (UTC)And I don't like Lauren much, mostly because she looks like she's about 19, and wtf is with the English accent, if her father is a Senator? Clearly she must have been raised in the States.
anyway.

Date: 2003-10-13 10:55 am (UTC)19? I thought she looked more like 16.
As for the accent... my guess is that she was sent away to boarding school--in England or Europe, because the American audience is meant to hear that accent as "English." Where she met Sark, or became involved in some other evil thing. Because much as I like her, and much as I want her and Vaughn to live happily ever after, my guess is that she will either turn out to be a bad guy or die in some tragic way.

Date: 2003-10-13 10:58 am (UTC)Oh, yes. Absolutely.

Date: 2003-10-13 01:26 pm (UTC)No, really? Are you SURE? OK, I'm sure lots of Americans will just assume she's English, but she has such a cute Aussie accent! And if she is SUPPOSED to sound English, then why isn't she just speaking in an English accent? It sounds to me like she's making no attempt whatever to disguise her native Australian.
And she IS cute, by the way.

Date: 2003-10-13 07:32 pm (UTC)And I dunno, if she turns out to be evil, that might be kind of fun. The baddies on the show do generally seem to be blessed with longevity (whereas both Francie and Will have passed away, right? my knowledge of the narrative suffers from gaps).
Incidentally, I too noticed that reflective "should I kill you?" look that Jack gave Marshall, and it made my blood run cold.

Date: 2003-10-15 12:44 am (UTC)But I've seen her in other US productions, and her accent was flawlessly American there. So I'm going to assume that her accent here was a deliberate choice.
Da da DUM.

Date: 2003-10-13 12:22 am (UTC)And also this: I'm findign Sloane cute. I'm going to hell.
Was exactly my reaction. *purrs at Sloane*

Date: 2003-10-13 01:59 am (UTC)I'm saving a seat for you right next to the lava pit. It's the one where they throw writers who leave plot holes big enough to fly 747s through. Because even Sark in evening dress and Sloane twitting the Trio of Yearning Looks couldn't quite redeem this episode for me. It dragged. Enough with the Sydney icing Lazeray footage, the shock value is gone, it's getting old. I feel like the show is treading water.

Date: 2003-10-13 10:57 am (UTC)So... we'll be in Hell together, but at least the Alias writers will be suffering more, and we can mock them? I can live with that. Especially if Sloane's there too.
I'm still happy with my shiny thing. No, it wasn't a great episode (in fact, it was sillier than usual) but I'm still happy. I'm pretty uncritical, really.

Date: 2003-10-13 12:33 pm (UTC)Normally, I am too. I'm not saying the episode didn't have it's bright spots, including Tequila Weiss, but I feel like I'm still waiting for the real story to begin.

See, Sloane's in charge of that area. I'm not sure how, but we missed the horns and forked tail. And mocking is mandatory.

Date: 2003-10-13 05:37 pm (UTC)Oh, good. If anyone is running the corner of Hell I end up in, I want it to be Sloane. At least there's the chance he'd look out for you.

Date: 2003-10-13 04:56 am (UTC)Oh, good. Someone else thinking about this. When Jack turned and looked through the door at Marshall, I actually said out loud, "Please don't kill Marshall. Please." Man, Jack is scaring me.
Weiss, though? Aw.

Date: 2003-10-13 05:33 pm (UTC)And Jack frightens me too.

Date: 2003-10-13 05:08 am (UTC)Heh. But there's cute and there's cute. I've always loved Crazy Uncle Arvin... because how can you not adore someone who's Evil with a capital "E", but still loves his wife and is fond of his arch-nemesis as the daughter he never had?
I don't lust after him though. That's a different category of cute entirely...

Date: 2003-10-13 06:32 am (UTC)I hadn't thought of it in precisely those terms, but now that you mention it I can completely see that. *shiver*

Date: 2003-10-13 07:32 am (UTC)He was totally cute in that scene. He was so getting off on being able to take the moral high ground with the CIA.
I'm glad to see some folks are liking Lauren. When it was revealed that she brokered Sloane's pardon, I was like sheesh, give the poor woman a chance, JJ.
And I agree on the pacing. They need a new editor or something.

Date: 2003-10-13 02:35 pm (UTC)I know. I'm stubborn that way. The big "up to no good!" anvil stuff just irritates me. Also, I don't think she was being all that unreasonable in her criticism of Sydney. And last I checked, kissing your husband (chastely, in private) was not considered in poor taste.

And how freaky was that moment? You could see the expression flit across VG's face for just a second. Honestly, I think Jack would kill Dixon if he thought it was necessary. And Mrs. Vaughn? Jack would break her neck in an instant.. and probably go out for coffee afterwards.
Also, I'm completely onboard with the Sark/Covenant confusion. Unless... Well maybe Sark is now running the Covenant?

Date: 2003-10-13 02:37 pm (UTC)Except that according to Jack, it's his love for Sydney that makes him different from Sloane, and somehow makes everything he does just peachy. Which is more than a little scary, since in my mind it's his love for Sydney that makes him act like a crazy-ass psychopath, much of the time.

Date: 2003-10-13 05:32 pm (UTC)Maybe I'm crazy to think that Jack ever had scruples, but a big YES to this. He's probably wondering whether killing Vaughn just on general principles is a good idea, although I don't think he's quite gotten to the stage where he'd actually do so. But yes, I don't think anyone is safe, should Jack decide that killing them is necessary to protect Sydney.
I suspect that he figured that killing Marshall would only be a temporary solution--the CIA would just find another computer geek to replace him.
