Vampire Diaries question

Since so many of you seem to like this show, I gave it a try, and in fact like it very much. It's on a channel I get here and we're up to episode 17. But since I have not watched it from the beginning, there are things I do not understand, like why it is such a big deal that Caroline found Vicki's body. Did Matt and his mother think she'd just run away from home or something? (I get that Jeremy thought that she'd become a vampire, but presumably this wasn't something everybody else thought too? or was it? I kind of lose track of who knows about vampires and who doesn't.) Basically, I am a little confused as to the significance of Vicki for the storyline here.
Also, as premises go, I find the whole idea that the same families have been living in this town since before the Civil War, and still basically control it, even weirder than the idea that vampires exist.
Please don't spoil me for anything still to come! I don't care too, too much, but it just would be a bit nicer.

Since this show is much more about families and friendship than romance, one of the huge deals about Vickie is that Jeremy loooved her (sorry, not a Jer fan) and was witness to her becoming a vampire and being staked by Stefan...until Elena had Damon take his memory of these events from him, which she did only because Jeremy was in such pain, still recovering (badly!) from the trauma of losing both his parents, making Vicky's death a double blow that Elena judged too harsh for him at that precise moment in time.
Essentially, Jeremy and all of the town except the Salvatore brothers and Elena spent most of the season thinking Vicky had just run away, wandered off...

And I also guess that this is going to be one of those "OK, I had your memories changed for your own good, and really it seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I'm not so sure" things.

It is! I love this show - it's actually quite plotty and pretty complex (shocking, I know).
