OK, a giant translucent octopus with Fatboy Slim in it just ate Russell Brand's Psychedelic Walrus Bus. The closing ceremonies are getting better.

ETA Nuns! Rollerblading to "Always look on the bright side of life!" (They have Romans, but no chorus on crosses, alas.)

Also, Morris dancers showed up! Only briefly, and they were overshadowed by almost everything else going on during Eric Idle's Monty Python extravaganza, but they were there.

I think that means that between the opening and closing ceremonies we managed to tick all the British cliche boxes.

I am sad about the lack of chorus on crosses, but suspect it was open to rather more global misunderstanding than the dancing Romans and rollerblading nuns.

Were there Morris dancers in the opening, before the industrial revolution got started? I have a vague feeling that they were around somewhere.

Yes, you could tell that they really, really wanted the chorus on crosses there, but I imagine that the US networks would not have been the only ones to complain.

The only thing missing was Boris Johnson on a zipwire. They could have just left him hanging there through the whole thing. It would have been so beautiful...

I'm pretty sure there weren't any Morris dancers in the opening montage, just maypoles, cricketers and farm animals. They were better suited to the craziness of Python anyway.

Perhaps they should have had Boris handing over the flag to the Rio mayor while on a zipwire? It would, alas, have been too late in the ceremony to save us from his dancing along to the Spice Girls.
