I've seen this here there and everywhere, and thought I might try it, too:

What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say, "I should write that entry about XYZ I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?

I am going to do the three weeks of DW thing and not post this to LJ, but as I do it I am hesitating, because it seems a little unfair: there are a lot of people on my FL on livejournal who don't want to move over here. And I don't want to cut them out; I don't have much attachment to LJ qua LJ (it's a service, I use it, great), but I do have a lot of attachment to people there.

Yeah, I like DW a lot and would be happy to move here permanently but I have people I like a lot who really really don't want to leave LJ for a variety of reasons. It seems unfair to cut them out, so I'm not going to.

Which, to answer your question: Hmm. I do enjoy your Roman history posts. Do you have any thoughts about British television I should be watching? (not that I really have time, but) Or thoughts about American tv you are watching?

I am right now watching the second episode of White Collar. It is lots of cute fun, and I have nothing else to say about it, really. And I can watch Bones again! only a week behind! I love that show to a ridiculous extent.

The new season of Dr. Who is shaping up quite well, but we're only 3 episodes in. We love Outnumbered, but it's probably funnier if you have children -- it's a sitcom about a family with three children (hence the title) and probably the funniest thing I've seen in years.

Actually, I've always wanted to ask you what influence, if any, you think the Greek and/or Roman cultures had on Methos. He went from Death on a horse to just a guy, after all. (And if that's way longer than you have time/interest for, skip it at will.)

No, this is a really cool question -- because actually, I've always thought that Methos was never all that comfortable in Rome. At least, fo much of the time. My personal fanon places him in Italy in the 8th century BCE, and again around the 6th/5th, but mostly spending time in Etruscan and Greek cities. (He really liked the Etruscans. What's not to like, really?) And in the greek world I always associate him with Ionia (hence the move to Southern Italy and Sicily at the end of the 6th century, because I don't really see Methos sticking around to fight the Persians.)

And then, he's such an epicurean -- ataraxia is totally his ideal state. I think this is appealing to him because it's a way of restraining the violence inside himself -- as you say, he used to be Death, and I think that not-being-Death is, at least at certain times, something of a struggle for Methos. I should totally write a "why Methos is an Epicurean (and does that mean Duncan is a Stoic?)" post.

Duncan, OTOH, would have totally loved Rome. He'd have been all, virtus! and fides! and pietas! These are my people!

I will have to think about questions. Other than, how are you? How is your life? How is teaching at Oxford? Do you still have foxes at the foot of the garden? What is Spartacus into these days?

Hi! We are all fine, for varieties of "fine" that include teething and all of us just getting over the worst colds ever. Spartacus is saying lots and lots of words, many of which we can actually understand!

And I think the foxes have moved back in -- anyway, something has been digging out the burrows at the bottom of our garden.

OK, a very late response, but I would LOVE to see you in June. It's very easy to go back and forth from London to Oxford by train or bus. It will still be term-time here, so I will be working Monday-Wednesdays (mostly, Mondays and Tuesdays by then, I think); it's a little hard to tell because how much free time I will have will depend on how much hand-holding my students need to survive the exams. But I am sure we will be able to meet up!
