I like this scene, but I know I'm never going to write the story it occurs in. It started out as a sequel to Fair but has such a different mood that it can't be any more. At this point I can hardly remember what the setup was: for some reason Krycek is looking for Mulder, and decides he needs Skinner's help. So he kidnaps him.
Skinner decides he has no option but to help Krycek find Mulder--or rather, to pretend to help Krycek find Mulder until he gets the chance to kill Krycek. Cue road trip.
Along which, at some point:
Krycek could move without disturbing him; when Skinner woke, he was already outside, talking to someone.
"Why aren't you in Massachusetts, at that school?" Krycek was asking.
"That school sucked," a much younger voice replied. "I hated the other kids. They called me Harry Potter."
Krycek coughed; it sounded like he was trying not to laugh. "Does Smith know... No, of course you wouldn't tell him that you were running away."
"I'm not a fucking idiot. Who's inside?"
"Is he rattling his chains? And don't swear."
"You swear all the time. Did you kidnap Mr. Skinner?"
"Skinner agreed to come with me."
"You're going looking for Agent Mulder, right?" There was a long silence. "You aren't going to..." The boy's voice was shaking.
"I have to do this."
"I'm coming with you, too."
"You're not coming with us, kid. You're going back to school."
"I'm not going back there. I'll just run away again."
"Oh, fuck."
"You told me not to swear. Can we go inside? I'm cold out here."
"I bet you're hungry, too, you manipulative brat."
"A little. A lady on the Greyhound gave me a sandwich, but that was a while ago."
Krycek muttered something that Skinner didn't catch; it might have been Russian. The door swung open and a small shape walked through into the room. "Hi, Mr. Skinner," the boy said. It was that boy Scully had found in Arizona. The Praise boy.
Krycek came over to the bed and reached for the handcuffs. "Rise and shine, Skinner. We're heading out."
Scully had sent Gibson to a different school, under a false identity; he was missing within three weeks. Krycek, or the men he worked for, must have picked him up. "Gibson," he said. "Are you all right? Has Krycek..."
"Alex is forcing me to go to a horrible boarding school."
"That school costs a lot of money," Krycek said, fiddling with the cuffs.
"It's like prison," Gibson said. "Like prison without TV."
"Stop trying to get sympathy from Skinner."
"Alex tried to throw me into a wall once, too," the boy continued.
"Jesus fucking Christ," Krycek muttered. The cuffs sprang open. "Get dressed, Skinner." The boy sat on Krycek's bed and watched him pull his shirt on. If he was afraid of Krycek, why had Gibson come running to him when he ran away? It didn't make sense. Gibson was as much a part of the Project as Skinner had been, or Mulder, or any of them. If Krycek was killing everyone involved, why was Gibson still alive?

Date: 2002-07-21 03:07 am (UTC)And now you've reminded me of this story I started thinking about a couple years ago, and then put aside. An M/K relationship, and Scully finds out. She isn't pleased. CSM isn't pleased either, and manipulates her into trying to break them up. It turns out that Krycek is just using Mulder anyway, and the whole thing turns into some kind of big manipulation-fest for control of the X-Files with Krycek and CSM using Mulder and Scully as proxies against each other. CSM wins when Scully shoots and kills Mulder, but then she has a breakdown and ends up locked up for life in an institution.
Is that dark enough for you? Hmm... maybe I should dig out my notes about that one.
