Spoilers, and this is pretty incoherent. You have been warned.


So, was that the hour of crazy denial, or was it just me? I mean, it starts with Sam, disturbingly casual, admitting that he shot the crossroads demon because "she was a smartass." Then he manages to look completely self-righteous, since after all, it's all for Dean. After that, the whole exchange with Bela, with the basic theme that Winchesters are good because they try to help people, and Bela is bad because she's looking for a profit.

I liked Bela a good deal mor in this episode than in her first -- especially with the angry sex line, and how much fin she seemed to be having. And of course, now she has secret family-related pain, and she and Dean can bond over that.

And then finally, back in the car, Dean saying that he understands why Sam went to the crossroads, and he'd have done it himself. Which, considering that they're in this situation because Dean in fact did exactly that, is a bit much. (And of course, 'go away" standing in for eternal torment in hell.) And Sam... you know, I think that Sam is turning into his image of Dean this season, and that's certainly not going to end well.

In general, I liked this episode a lot -- I'm just too tired to be coherent. But there is not bad with Dean wearing a tuxedo. I swear, he gets better looking with every episode. It's a little eerie. I do feel that ghostly pirates might have been put to better use, and that Sam's last minute save was kind of an asspull on the part of the writers. The one thing that really, really did not work for me was the thing with Sam and the older woman. It somehow failed utterly to be funny.

One thing I did notice was that they were definitely trying to give the second victim, the brother, the same kind of creepy bathroom scene female characters regularly get. I'm not sure it really worked.

Urk. I am more tired than I really ought to be. Sleep now, or at least very soon.

I am really, really annoyed by the horrible creepy Sammy being hit on by the old pathetic woman thing. It is horribly sexist and awful. I mean, JP was awesome with the comedy, but it was unfunny because of the setup of her just being so creepy and one-dimensional.

Sam's "Miss Havisham" thing was funny, though, mostly because I like it when we are reminded Sam has read books.

Other than that, it was a great ep with lots of good stuff in.

I think Dean's reply to the "angry sex line" was even better than the line, itself.

I also liked the way Sam and Dean were squatting in the house. It is an interesting addition to their MO.

And also how truly uncomfortable Dean was dressed up at the swanky affair and how not uncomfortable Sam was.

I love Dean referring to his impending death as "going away." And then just NOT validating Sam's wanting him to give a crap about himself.

Dean's "Stop objectifying me" line was hilarious, I agree. The whole exchange was marvelous. And he may have been uncomfortable in the tux, but boy did it look good on him.

And yes, I agree about the squatting -- it makes perfect sense, especially in a community like that one, where a proportion of the houses will just be for summer and occasional use.

Dean has so much damage, at this point. I just don't even know where to start.

I just love the way he's telling Sam what a great life he's going to have once Dean "goes away", too.

Sam's stronger, he'll be fine and "live his life" and it will all be fluffy bunnies and rainbows.

I actually kind of want to see that fic. The one where Sam DOES go on with his life and doesn't miss Dean at all and doesn't really feel all that guilty about it.

But that's mostly because I'm a fanfic agitator from way back.

God, I'm so struck by how Dean can't say 'die' or 'go to hell' or 'leave you'. He just can't do it. His defenses are up so strongly that the words won't even leave his mouth, and that's incredibly un-Deanlike for such a practical, cards-on-the-table guy. His fear must be eating him up.

How much denial is Dean actually in? This is what I'm not sure about, because thinking that you're facing an eternity of torment in Hell is so difficult, and I wonder if he's managed to persuade himself that this is more like Sam leaving for Stanford ("You'll be fine without me") and less like John selling his soul and going to hell. He's just so resistant to facing what he's done -- and of course, if he did face it, he'd have to allow Sam to do something. Right now it's a catastrophe, but it's a catastrophe he can control.

It's not just what he can't say -- it's also what he can't think. At least, I think so.

Dean's self-image being what it is, I wonder if he doesn't think he kind of deserves hell for "cheating" that guy out of life in Faith and for failing his Dad and failing Sam, etc. I think that might have a large part to do with his actions because there's also no way he could articulate that to Sam. Because Sam would argue that it isn't true. But I think Dean feels his "failure" as a person and his thievery of life keenly.
