I agree that Sam is a long way from distracting me from John (in part, JP is just a little too young for that -- when we meet Sam he's about as old as some of my students!) But yes, I love watching the gloves come off -- those little moments when he shakes off that harmless pose, and he's so big, and so fast that... wow.
I've said this of family, but Sam? So smart he's stupid.
