Someone upthread talked about "no happy endings" and I agree, and I think you hit that perfectly.
I think the feeling I came away with was less bittersweet and more sad - melancholy and lingering.
It wasn't until I read the story the second time that I noticed it was more urban than I was expecting - that totally makes sense, if they're going to be crossing paths with Martia.
Loved the book of poetry, that they got dressed separately, that it's missing someone that's the connection between John and Alex. And I thought the hunting details were well done.
