I'm sure that they wrapped up the YED plot because they were concerned about renewal, but I think it was a brave choice nonetheless -- shows which are too reliant on a single storyline can run into problems if they drag it out too long.
And as you say, it turns out that getting rid of the YED hasn't made everything better, after all. Which is really cool.
