I can't believe it's been quite so long since I updated! Sorry!

Things in my life: I decided I needed to listen to more music, and figured that since I'm no longer quite so young as all that, Radio 2 was the way forward. After 5 minutes, I thought, well, I'll give it another couple songs. I think I lasted 8 minutes total. Apparently I am not too old to listen to Radio One, thank God.

Also thank God: Michael Gove is out of Education! Although I'm sure he's been replaced by someone else awful at least she will be awful in a different way. Although I see that she is keeping her brief as Minister for Women, because that is obviously not an important of full-time job, and can easily be combined with oversight of education. Why not just call her the Minister for Women and Children and be done with it?

I really need to become a citizen here, so I can vote against everyone ever.

On television: Utopia is back! And much the same as the first season: very pretty and colorful, but also very violent and confusing. Over the past couple of years I've stopped enjoying the following things on tv: shows about serial killers; shows about masculinity; shows about violence; shows which use endangered children to prove that they are making a serious point about something; shows without two or more female characters. This ends up ruling out a surprising number of things on TV. And weirdly seems to rule out more UK-produced shows than US imports, although that might just be the slow season speaking. But I do think that the fashion at the moment is to produce Serious Drama, and that the way to prove the seriousness of your drama with lots of graphic violence and child endangerment.

Oh my God! I need to stop grumbling! I don't hate everything! Really!

In fact, US people, you all need to start watching The Almighty Johnsons so we can talk about it and I can prove that there are things I like (that, or Nashville, but Nashville isn't genre so I'm not holding my breath.)

Good to see you! And I think you're dead on about the Serious Drama trend. Would be nice if television (media in general) could trend toward serious without that meaning endless violence. I think you can even cover violent topics (war, crime, historical drama, etc) without being ridiculously violent.

That makes sense. The violence on 24 may not be there to manipulate viewers per se, where elsewhere it most certainly is.
