I was in the video store last night to pick up a copy of Stargate to prepare for the mock paper that dare not speak its name, but as I passed the TV section I noted that they had a copy of the first season of Northern Exposure. Nostalgia had been growing in me anyway, since elishavah started posting about the show, so I picked it up as well and watched the first two episodes last night.

I find that there's always a moment of fear when I turn on a show I haven't seen in years -- will it hold up, or will it just seem dated and stupid? But really, these first episodes held up well. The thing that really struck me was that, although he's more than capable of being an enormous jerk, Joel is also an extremely compassionate doctor -- there's this scene in the first episode where he storms out of the office they've set up for him because he has no intention of spending four years working in the ass-end of Nowhere, Alaska. And then he walks back in and starts treating patients. Sure, he's pretty brusque about it, but he also is incapable of turning his back on them.

I will be wallowing in the nostalgia for at least a week. Yay!


In other news, I have mostly recovered from my outburst of rage earlier today, although whenever I think about the thing that ticked me off I start to foam at the mouth (and in fact as I explained the situation just now to a colleague I really did start to spit and swear again). RAGE!

And in further news, I will get to pick up my laptop on the way home today. They claim that it works now. We'll see.

I will completely sidestep any issues that cause you rage by pointing out the completely adorable packaging for the NE season one set. The quilted! The zipper! The orange! The moose!

It is cute! Although I rented it, rather than buying it outright, so I am packaging-free. But I've drooled over it in the store, as well.

It's such an adorable show, really.

Kristen and I were cooing over it a couple of weeks ago. I still snicker at the memory of the Wine Incident, which marked the first time I ever liked Eve. The potting soil did me in.

I sympathize with the RAGE! -- same general causes as a few weeks ago, I assume?

And feel very heartened about trying Northern Exposure.

I'll be interested in knowing what you think about it. It was appointment television for me when it was on -- so part of me knows that it's kind of dated, but I still feel all warm and fuzzy and uncritical as I watch it.

I think that the RAGE is now instinctive, whenever I have anything to do with the university administration. I should call an associate dean tomorrow to make sure I understand what's going on, but I couldn't today because the hysterical rage would come through whenever I mentioned the issue to anyone.

barkley has been watching all the seasons, and regaling us with commentary throughout. Very entertaining, and now that you're watching it too I think I may have to get my hands on it and watch some. Just for nostalgia's sake...

I am sorry about the RAGE!! Hope you can find some workable resolution to it soon.

Luckily, I think that in this case the problem can be fixed -- provided I can calm down long enough to have a reasonable conversation with an associate dean! No bodies to be hidden, at least not today.

I'm adoring the Northern Exposure episodes. We should have a group viewing, or something!

Oh, I'm fine. I think. And I'm leaving for the UK in a little more than a week, so there's that to look forward to.

Northern Exposure is so much fun! But I don't even know if it's available in the UK -- was it ever shown there?

I think ours is significantly more evil, but that might just be because I know how evil they really are. But the laptop is working, at least for the moment. I think it's probably time to bite the bullet and think about a replacement, though.
