It's a bad sign when one is bored by the lecture one is trying to write, isn't it? God, but I'm bored. I just want to go home and sleep.
So instead, I'll do a self-centered meme. I've seen this in various places:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my fics, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular line, why I chose that characterisation, what I was listening to as I wrote, what crack I was taking and where you can get some ... anything. Anything you might like to know about how I wrote a fic, I shall do my best to answer.
Please, please distract me from the hell that is my lecture.

Date: 2004-11-23 01:08 pm (UTC)As far as I remember, you concurred some time ago that your ILWT Krycek isn't quite such a cranky, uncooperative asshole as your other Kryceks (although just as violent, probably!) Why do you think he turned out that way, and is this Krycek still as close to your heart as your other versions of him or is he an interpretation of the character that you no longer subscribe to (as you stated yourself, it's quite a miracle that your Marita puts up with the Kryceks you've dealt her *g*)?

Date: 2004-11-23 01:59 pm (UTC)Hm. Well, I like him better than most of the other Kryceks I write--in that sense he's much closer to my heart! And I do think that that was still a valid interpretation of the character. The difference is that ILWT Krycek has a world outside the conspiracy (or did until the events of that series, anyway!) and has been shaped by that world in a way that my other Kryceks (and especially the K/Ma Kryceks) don't and haven't. For them, the whole universe has narrowed down to this one struggle and the series of horrific choices it brings, whereas ILWT Krycek can still see a world beyond that. At least, he can sometimes. And that makes him less frightened, and less mean--I think a lot of the reason my Kryceks are so mean is that they're terrified. The world is ending, and they're terrified that there's nothing they can do about it, and they deal with that by lashing out at everyone around them.
As an aside, I sometimes think that I'm unusual among Krycek-writers for really preferring later-season Krycek--but I love his desperation, the sense that he's always just on the knife-edge of utter destruction. (It's possibly a wonder that Krycek puts up with me, as an author.)

Date: 2004-11-24 02:00 am (UTC)That does make sense. ILWT Krycek can sometimes relax his guard (your K/Ma Krycek wouldn't allow an old aquaintance to cut up his food for him on his plate in mixed company, would he?), and is able to connect with certain other people as individuals, not just as factors in the equation to stop colonization. Of course, the Bookman family are extreme enough to fit in with his own concerns and idiosyncracies, so they're a workable, if volatile match for him. (I know I've said this before and that you're not planning to write it, but I was quite intrigued by the clues to his past with the Bookmans at the beginning of ATE. I'd have loved to read a little backstory exploration from that time.)
I'm glad to hear the ILWT Krycek is still close to your heart -- he's close to mine, too. :)
As far as your K/Ma stories is concerned, I think Marita is better able than anyone to understand that Krycek is terrified and why. They know that about each other, the strain of running to keep ahead on a razor's edge. Maybe that's why she puts up with the meanness, beyond strategy. (That, and the "extremely kissable" factor.)
Thanks for the reply!
