There was going to be an angry religious post here, but I thought better of alienating the majority of people on my friends list. I'll get you all to hate me some other time.

Instead, it is time to turn back to the reason we're all here: the shiny. I've been reading a lot of X-Men fanfic recently, mostly movie-based. And there I was, reading and enjoying, but also kind of puzzled by that enjoyment. I mean, I managed to ignore all this stuff after X2 came out... what was different about the stuff I was reading now? Then I realized--do I have a pairing kink which is left unsatisfied by movieverse Xavier/Magneto? Indeed, I do not. That relationship has everything I want, right there. (There are other things I like about this fandom, but that's a big one.)

There's only one down-side to this: it's getting more and more difficult to walk past the comic book store on the way to the supermarket. I know that getting into the comics side of things will only lead to madness... but it gets more and more tempting, every day.

Would that be something along the lines of "theocracy, democracy--what's the big deal?" or anything like that? Because I've already bitten through my tongue and all my fingernails. Whatever, don't hold back on my account. Your reasoning has never been other than sound.

Did you get the email wherein I carefully refrained from pointing out that Auburn is one to see on X-Men comicverse choices? (I only ask because of populli's occasional omnivorous consumption of emails.)

It was more along the lines of "Protestantism: Does it make you stupid, or does it just help a lot?" which is why I'm obviously not going to post it. I'm just about well-brought-up enough to know that criticising other people's religion is in poor taste.

I did get that email, and am weighing the possibility of asking her, or one of the other comics-literate people on my flist, for some guidance. But I'm still not sure that I really want to branch out.

I have a crackpot thesis about this; it's to do with the nexus of Protestantism and bourgeois greed, US-style. Catholics can be just as crazy-stupid along the same lines (see the recent EU kerfuffle) but they don't rise to power as often in the US because the tradition doesn't assume that faith is rewarded with a high net worth. Here God and making a lot of money get associated so directly that business success starts to equate with righteousness. Business success and actual intelligence having only an occasional acquaintance, understand. I say this as one who's worked for frighteningly stupid business owners who nevertheless could buy me at one end of the street and sell me at the other, and wouldn't hesitate. Also as one whose recent foreparents (is that a word?) include both immigrant Catholics and foot-washing Baptists, and that's my inflammatory comment for today.

This kind of thing is even more reason that I shouldn't write that post, as my version includes a lot of swearing and incoherent ranting about why all Christians except for Seventh Day Adventists are going to hell for eating pork.

But it's your religious tradition--it's easier for you to point out the logical fallacies. Alsom your own post was so well-spoken that I had to give up my incoherent anger.

I just had a call from my sister, who was fleeing the scene after setting our father off on one of his anti-gay, anti-divorce, anti-everything Rush-loving, Bush-voting, bible-thumping rants, though he is an idiosyncratic Catholic and thinks all the protestants are going to hell too.

We think the world is going to hell in a handbasket too, of course, but we think it would get better if folks like my dad would stop voting for W.

The thing is, when we were growing up, our dad was a liberal democrat who taught me all I know about appreciating difference. He took me to my first political rally, to see John F. Kennedy, when I was about eleven. I don't know what turned him into a conservative wacko, but I am starting to wonder if the aliens aren't scarfing up all the liberals and replacing them with pod people.
