vaznettiSome genius decided to put the second season of Downton Abbey up against the last season of Spooks (our motto: Let God sort them out). Thank goodness for iplayer!
Actually, I have nothing to say about Downton Abbey. BH kept pointing out the little details they got wrong, but who cares, really?
As for Spooks, they had an obligala! I love a good obligala! All in all it felt quite lively as an episode: bouncy and brightly written, without feeling false to the show. Even Dmitri had some good lines! I particularly liked the scenes with Harry and Ruth. All of them, but especially, "May I see the file?" "Not while I draw breath."
Oh, Harry. This year is really going to be the tragedy of Harry, of course. Naturally your illegitimate Russian son has come back, all unknowing, to try to kill you. Although really, I think putting a son on his parents protection detail is unrealistic even for Spooks. And speaking of that sort of thing, the new section chief (Erin) isn't the same woman who placed the call after the assassin was killed, right? Please, let's not have yet another mole.
Anyway, yes, Harry and Ruth: I find myself hoping that the whole thing remains subtextual. Although my little shipper heart would love for the season to end with both of them surviving and running off together to live happily ever after, that seems unlikely. Perhaps less unlikely, but I would still appreciate it: Harry is killed, and Ruth takes his place. It struck me after her little exchange with the Home Secretary. And Ruth does seem to have rather more experience and seniority than the random people they keep bringing in to do Harry's job whenever he's in disgrace or missing or whatever.
Anyway, yay for Spooks being back!
