I had a sudden insight in the video rental place today. They were showing Harry Potter, and had just reached the scene in the train, and I was listening in a rather distracted way, when out of the blue, the truth came over me. Hermione has the most annoying accent I've ever heard. No wonder Snape picks on her. If she were my student, it would be an act of will not to bitch-slap her every time she opened her mouth.

In fact, most of the Harry Potter kids have dreadful accents. It isn't just Hermione, although she may be the worst.

the first time i saw harry potter, i wanted to take hermione by her hair and dangle her from the top turret of the highest tower. she is the most annoying character ever created.

i should have known then i was in love with snape. *chuckle*

I think Hermione makes me cringe because I recognize so much of myself in her. At eleven I too had bushy hair and knew the answer to every question. But I want to be Snape when I grow up.

Laughing hysterically and saying Yes! Yes! Not from any sort of informed posture, you understand. But she makes me grind my teeth.

Would read further commentary on "dreadful" with great appreciation. Dreadfully affected? Or just playing to a series of horribly stereotypical types?

Her accent! Oh my goodness! It's truly horrific. (But I am strangely intolerant of British accents. I think it's my anglophobia coming through.)

Now I've forgotten exactly what sounded so terrible to me about all the other children--it's quite likely that they have what sound like perfectly reasonable accents to an English ear, but to my ear they sounded either too posh or too fake.

The kid who plays Draco is the one that gets me. He's supposed to be uber-posh and his Cockney accent really fucks that up. I laugh almost every time he opens his mouth.

And Hermione makes me cringe largely because of the being exactly like her memories. I'm amazed I didn't get the crap kicked out of me for being such an affected little prig.

Putting on a fake Cockney or Estuarine accent is quite the posh thing to do, in some circles, but I just can't see it as in character for Draco. (For ages I'd assumed that Jamie Oliver, who's a big-time celebrity chef in the UK for no apparent reason, went to Eton or some such for precisely this reason.)

When I was applying to private schools, in fourth grade, I sat in on classes in each school. In one case, I ended up answering all the questions the teacher asked, because I'd already read the book. To be honest, I'm more amused by that episode than anything else.
