They don't tell Jack Bristow what has happened. They don't need to. He knows what Sydney's done the moment they leave him alone in the shower: he submits to the barber and accepts the suit, too large after the last year. After that there's a journey by car, shorter than he expected, and nothing else is real until his daughter is in his arms. Thinner, harder than he remembers.
All through Dixon's reserved welcome--and why not? Jack had the man's job, once--and those of his other colleagues, he has to stop himself from reaching out to her again.

And then another homecoming. She waits until he's out of CIA-owned property and in his own apartment, but that very night, once Sydney has arranged his meager furniture and left, he hears a window slide open. He might have done more to secure his quarters, he supposes.
"You shouldn't be here," he says.
He doesn't need light to see her eyes slant as she smiles. "You aren't compromised." He knows how careful she is, how careful they both are--in everything but this one thing, the feel of muscle sliding under skin, the press of his wife's mouth against his.

...and also bristling--well, okay, not bristling, but maybe feeling a little defensive--about this notion that the second isn't somehow in character.
I think, though, that this second piece is so close to my own wishes for the characters that it counts as wish-fulfillment in any case. And I'm not entirely sure that either would allow themselves to be so ruled by their desires: as well, no mention of Sydney here? Of course with only 100 words, there are limits to what you can do.

Ah! I'm in the midst of a long meandering letter on all of the things you mentioned in your last several. Unfortunately I have no way of transferring data from my laptop to the public internet computer, so it's in longhand. Will probably send tomorrow. Today's cash is exhausted...
Vacation is lovely, thanks. Beautiful place, interesting things to do and see. Good food!
PS: Am enjoying Tacitus very much.

Date: 2003-09-30 05:44 pm (UTC)In my dream, you lived in a large greenhouse with a grand piano in it. The house also had a large formal dining room, although I'm not sure how that was attached to the greenhouse.
I'd love to see the letter, but don't let it get in the way of your vacation! I'll still be here when you get back. (Am very jealous, though. We went to the Big Island for our honeymoon, and it was amazing.)
