I've been watching what looks to me like the well-educated version of an Internet Retard Slapfight (corollary: The Internet Is For Retards) over on fca-l. Do not, if you have any regard for me, allow me to get involved. My response would essentially be as follows:

1) You're so wrong! Neener, neener, neener!
2) And anyway, who died and made you the boss of everything?

So I think I ought to be able to control myself. The varieties of fannish experience never cease to amaze me.

Oh, fca-l. I had to go on digest for that one; the snooty superiority wafting from 98.7% of the individual posts drove me crazy. What's this one about, the zine vs. internet and how the internet has ruined fandom?

How dod you guess? Yes, that's it exactly. People who use the internet are immature and rude. I think it's interesting, to be honest, because having been involved in both eras, my experience is the exact opposite.

Having also been involved in both internet and paper-based fandoms - to some extent I still am - I have to say that I've not seen a lot of difference between the two, either in manners or quality.

Sock puppets aren't new to the internet; they just work differently. And I've seen fandoms in both places shatter into little tiny splinters when personalities or concepts or evolutions in the fandom rub people up the wrong way. Human nature will out, whatever the medium.
