I'll tell you the same thing I texted to my mom: BOOTH IS NOT ALLOWED TO DIE.
*g*
I would also say that, while taking a bullet for her is new, it's hardly the first time their relationship has strayed into weird and personal and seriously life-threatening territory. The episode with Brennan and Hodgins buried alive springs to mind. Or the one where [spoiler redacted] was trying to kill Bones, and Booth almost got blown up.
Not only that, but they've almost been pleasantly effective at bringing them closer through shared moral quandary. I mean, it usually involves the effects on the conscience of killing somebody, but how often do you see that seriously addressed on TV? Not to mention the ongoing arc of Brennan's father.
Anyway, I'm just thinking that it may not be a ploy to bring them together. They're already about as "together" (in the colloquial sense) as two people who aren't sleeping with each other can be. And while I see your point about them not needing more emotional baggage, at the same time I hardly think that a little more emotional baggage is going to make much of a difference. Perhaps Sweets will disagree, however! Wouldn't that be fun?
