I think my problem is that of the main characters I like Polly the least; I don't know why I don't find her more sympathetic, but I don't.
I had that same reaction to her, and I think it's because not only does she think she knows best for all of them, she also thinks she's smarter than they are, when in fact, she's only in possession of more information.
