I think other people were much more blown away by that than I was: I thought it was good stuff but... hm.

You know what it is? I hate Octavian. I just loathe him. I can't help it. It's not the actor's fault, it's not the writers, it's just who Octavian happens to be. I'm not sure I realized how deep my loathing for the little thug ran until I watched him being Octavian. So I think this will be a hard season for me, at least until Cicero dies and I can focus on hating Brutus, Antony and Octavian with a sort of equal-opportunity loathing. Actually, Antony will probably end up the least loathesome of them, at least in the series.

It would be really neat if Octavian makes everyone call him "Caesar" in this, since that what he did.

Some of the political stuff is good -- I like that they worked Caesar's acts and their legalization in here, since it might mean that they're planning to do something with that. Presumably Lepidus will make an appearance in the next episode, or else we'll only have two triumvirs, which would be pretty funny. The episode also did a good job of showing how lost the conspirators actually were, politically, because they were all so closely bound to Caesar and because Brutus was such an idealist.

I did think it was a very well put-together-episode -- the decision not to show the funeral speeches was brilliant, even though I would love to see them do a proper Roman funeral some day -- for a statesman, I mean, with the masks and costumes and the big procession. I loved the way they handled Caesar's will, and Posca. Calpurnia had her moment of crazy awesomeness, although I thought Atia seemed a little whiny. I did like her scenes with Antony -- his facial expressions are particularly good in those.

I loved Pullo in it, absolutely loved watching him hold everything together for Vorenus. And poor Vorenus, cursing his children and seeing the curse come true. (As an aside, I would not be surprised if we saw Vorenus' children again, presumably in a whorehouse somewhere; Erastes might have killed them, but he might have sold them on somewhere, instead). I don't know what the deal with the dirt-smudging thing was, with Pullo and Eirene, so don't ask me. Sometimes the use of ritual in the show is a little random.

It's a good thing that Pullo and Vorenus are the heart of the show, though, because of my Octavian-shaped problem. I don't even love to hate him; I just hate him. I think I'll become more enthusiastic as the season progresses, as well; I did last season.
