vaznetti: (lost in the wash)
A December posting meme is well beyond my capacity, although I am pretty sure that I can take at least one day this weekend on which I will do absolutely no work-related work. This will be the first in about the last three. My decision to take a year off from Yuletide is definitely looking like the right choice.

I have read a book, though: I just finished The Flame Bearer, by Bernard Cornwell, which is the 10th Uthred son of Uthred book -- I haven't read any of the others, I don't think, but I have watched the show and really enjoy it. The book and show canon aren't quite the same but there's enough overlap to make everything clear enough. It was very enjoyable, especially the end, and did give support to my suspicion that every single Uthred book has a long disquisition on the shield wall and tactics relevant to it, just like every Sharpe book has a section explaining The Column and The Line. spoiler, I guess, although you could have seen it coming )

And in television news, we have finished watching Upstart Crow with Spartacus, having completely forgotten how preetty much all the jokes are about sex (in true Shakespearean fashion). Luckily he understood none of it. We are also watching The Crown, having started with season 3. I had avoided the show, because I assumed it was a puff piece for the monarchy, and isn't the Queen lovely, blah blah blah, but it turns out it's actually about how they're all sociopaths. And even more so in Season 4, obviously. Even Gillian Anderson's monstrously twisted Thatcher isn't quite a match for the Queen's blithe moral vacuity. It's great in a terrible, terrible way.
