Jun. 2nd, 2004 10:00 amDue to the need to finish S4 of Homicide before the B.H. headed home, we only caught the last ten minutes of Two Cathedrals on the Bravo WW marathon, but that was enough to remind me of what an unlikely success the episode is. At heart, it's nothing more than a string of dramatic cliches: a huge storm (subtle, that), a "ghost," a funeral, flashbacks, power walks (set to a Dire Straits--thanks Amy!--song, of all things!), and a cliffhanger ending which is no cliffhanger at all. Add to that an important chunk of monologue in Latin, and there is no way in Hell that the episode should work. But it does. I don't understand how it does, but it does. It is, I think, the best single hour of television I've ever seen.
