I picked up a copy of the Onion last night (because my amazing plan to make veal stew was never put into practice, so I went out for a burrito instead...), and the headline was something along the lines of "Faced with a major crisis in North Korea, Bush decides to attack Iraq." As is often the case, the Onion is spot-on. You can just see the thinking in government circles:

A. We are in deep shit with Kim Jong Il (motto: Give me what I want or I'll nuke Tokyo!).
B. It would be bad if we were in this much shit with Saddam Hussein (motto: Death to America!), too.
C. Let's deal with Saddam Hussein before he can change his personal motto to "Give me what I want or I'll nuke [insert city of your choice]!"

To be honest, this makes a great deal of sense to me. It's the very seriousness of the situation in North Korea which makes some kind of action against Iraq so appealing. Because it's too late to do anything about North Korea now. We're stuck with the worst of all possible words, because Kim Jong Il's threats are real. He really will nuke Tokyo, or even better a city in the western US once he figures out how to fit his nukes onto ICBMs. And he really will start selling nuclear weapons to anyone with the ready cash to purchase them. And frankly, one guy in the world doing that is more than enough.

I think I'll stop here.

I just watched Becoming (part 2) on FX. That is a damn fine hour of television. I'd forgotten quite how good it is.

Edited to add: gakked a personality test from [livejournal.com profile] debc:still an INTJ. All of you who are surprised, please raise your hands.
