Cate Blanchett worked for me, but it wasn't until after seeing Two Towers that I was finally able to read the books all the way through. So she was defining for the character in my mind. No, the casting that bothered me was Eowyn. I pictured someone icier and less fragile from the description. I'm a Peta Wilson fan, and her demeanor is the closest I could come up with.
I agree with the Shire/ Merry and Pippin issue. It seemes like the biggest storyline fully excised in this telling of the epic. Well, and Tom Bombadil.
