Well, I'm pretty sure you're never going to write Sam/Dean or John/either boy, but I also don't want you to. So, um. Aha! I got it--a story in which John Winchester (or either of the boys) actually dies, and no take-backs.

What amazes me about this prompt is that it's the sort of thing any normal person might write! But I will think on it because you're right, I shy away from that kind of thing.

Well, I tried, anyway:

This is the story hunters tell about the Winchesters: that once upon a time there was a demon, and it made three mistakes. First it killed Mary Winchester, above her younger son's crib one night. Then many years later, it took John Winchester's life in exchange for the older son. Two years after that, it came back and killed Dean Winchester, who took his last gasping breath cradled in his brother's arms.

Or maybe, they say, maybe it only made one mistake, over and over: because each time it killed, it left Sam Winchester alive.
