more "Houses of the Holy" thinking

...by other people, anyway. I have no thoughts of my own, but I did have a lot of open tabs. So here are some further comments on the episode:

[livejournal.com profile] hossgal talks about Religion in the SPNverse, on the Winchesters and their different ways of relating to the Deity. Both boys, I think, make the mistake of over-personalizing their struggles, of seeing redemption (or grace) as something which is escaping them, and them alone, instead of being part of the human condition.

[livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka talks about Sam, Dean and belief, which I love for this particular line: Dean is not the type to be impressed by talk of "mysterious ways" or "God's master plan." As far as he's concerned, if there's a Cosmic Good out there, it's not doing it's damn job. Unlike Sam, who's looking for a loving redeemer, Dean is looking for a fellow smiter of evil. And unlike Sam, who still hopes, Dean is pretty much resigned to having to do all the smiting himself. But he's not happy about it.

[livejournal.com profile] dodger_winslow has a post on Sam, Dean and the concept of the true believer. I'm not sure I understand it, but I haven't had much time to think about it.

[livejournal.com profile] rez_lo points out that the real issue isn't faith but error: the false comfort of easy judgment and its potentially deadly consequences; how important it is to read the signs correctly, to question orthodoxy of all kinds, examine and re-examine appearances and assumptions, to get the killing and dying right.

[livejournal.com profile] elishavah thinks about the difference between religion and Religion, and the way Sam and Dean's beliefs and backgrounds figure in the larger SPN universe.

The posts I mentioned back on Friday are also good, and there are interesting comments on all these posts, as well.

Thanks for this. It saves me trawling through my f'list for hours. Now I wonder if I'll get anything read before the next ep?

Thank you for these recs. Alas, my brain is dead from classes, and I have no thoughts.

Yet.
