SPN 2x08: Crossroad Blues
I changed the channel just in time to see the ugliest ring in the world on Smallville. Enough of that. Let's go on to my preliminary comments on this week's SPN.
Oh yeah, let's start with Robert Johnson. I was really hoping for that. That made me extremely happy. The music. The music is making me happy.
Dean's hopeful expression after the porn site line never ceases to amuse me. But in general I am becoming more and more suspicious of Dean when he goes into quiet mode, when he's just listening. Because his mind is working but you don't quite know where it'll take him, and for a man who's not a very good liar he does sometimes hide his thoughts well. Although in this particular instance we know the general outlines -- the possibility of a deal, what we already know John did. There's an extent to which that lessens the dramatic tension, but then again, we never quite know what Dean will do.
I am so very glad that Dean is not, in fact, a fool. And that demons read the newsletter and think that Dean is real pretty when he's suffering. That's 99.5% of the fandom, right there, at least on LJ. Oh, Dean.
But really, like Dean would get ten full years if he brought his father back in a deal like that. John would be mad enough to kill him himself.
So, John. I don't know whether I want to touch that one or not. Dean will find a way, that's what I think. Dean will find a way. And John did what he could with what he had, and Sam's right -- they are his legacy. And he did go out fighting, but fighting for them, not for himself. Because sometimes Dean can see right through his father, and sometimes he doesn't see him very well at all.
I'm going to have more to say about this later, though, when I've thought a bit. But Dean will find a way, he'll find a way to do what he needs to.
Also, I have ER on in the background: has anyone else noticed that they're doing a subplot with Bloody Mary and children who fight demons? or something like that?

*dies*
In fact...I think that's a really high possibility, if Dean ever made such a deal *G*
But let me squee! They can and will bring John back. I'm sure they will. And if it weren't past 3 am here, I would be more coherent :D

And even so, he was very, very tempted. God. He is going to find a way to do it for real. He is going to need to, I think. Because if we end up with hunters fighting hunters... they're going to need John on their side, before the end.

The sheer thought of that fills me joy...I must be a really bad person! ;)

Oh, why can't you write for SPN? that's what I want to see, that, as you said! *hopes*

And the writers are such crazy fans themselves, that I'm pretty sure that if I've thought of something, they have too.

(Anonymous) 2006-11-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)ROTFLMAO. Yes. Exactly.
I am anticipating a buttload of "Five Ways Dean Didn't Make It Ten Years" fics. With some glee.
I want George fic. I want George fic *bad*. There has got to be some fangirls out there who've spent years living in a loft, hand to mouth, painting or potting or something, who can write me a fic about those ten years, and why he was ready to go at the end.
And, finally, don't forget I will march into hell myself and I will slaughter each and every one of you evil sons of bitchs myself, so help me God.
...Demon, honey, you really shouldn't have taunted him that last time. He's crazy enough to do it.
Also: Kripke is a bastard. Did you see what the Impala did? Woot!

I wanted to see George again at the end. Because he made it too, just by grace, fully believing that he didn't deserve it.
Oh, Dean will march into Hell before the end. Of this I am certain.
Did you see what the Impala did? Woot!
I missed this -- or I don't know what you're referring to. What do you mean?

There are some personal (but not family) reasons I think on that scene in DT with a great deal of satisfation - the way the Winchesters know each other, and it's not all roses and sunshine, this knowledge. It's bitter and angry, and unfair, and unreasonable, except the reason that the heart knows.
And I love how they depend on each other, lean on their knowledge of each other. And yet, sometimes, are very blind to each other.
Because he made it too, just by grace, fully believing that he didn't deserve it.
Sometimes the minor characters on this show just *grab* me - Monica was another one. And Halley's youngest brother.
I would like to think that about George. But I don't think he did - the bargain Dean made didn't cover him. (Did it?) And I'm a little sad and unhappy about that.
Speaking of Dean and bargins - jesus, that boy can sit and read me the phonebook in Latin any time he cares to do so. I'll provide the chair. And the phone book.
Ah, sorry, let me paddle back from the shallow end.
Oh, Dean will march into Hell before the end. Of this I am certain.
And you, oh classics scholar, know how often *that* turns out well. *g*
What do you mean?
Promo. Fangirl craziness-n-squee inducing promo. Did you not get it?

Um, I was kind of distracted by all of the Dean-with-guns stuff, which I have a really strong fondness for. And by the end I was just flailing too much to pay attention to the details. (It will go up on the site, I hope.)
But I'll take Dean in my Latin classes any time. Wow. That was... well, pretty much as hot as Dean with guns.
What? I spend a lot of time in the shallow end of the pool!
You're right about George, now that I think about it -- the bargain only covered the other guy. My mistake.
And you, oh classics scholar, know how often *that* turns out well. *g*
Hope springs eternal. Although the likelihood is that you're not wrong about that, it can be done -- Heracles and Theseus both make it in and out with what they came for. More or less; in the Winchesters' case, I'd guess it might end up being a little less than more.

If they did a classical walk into hell to bring dad out, I would so die of the hotness. metaphorically speaking.
no subject
The hotness and the inevitable suffering -- because you may get in and you may get out, and you may even get what you came for, but you don't, no matter what, get to keep it.

(Anonymous) 2006-11-17 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)My work here is done.
(I am *so* having DoH flashbacks. All the way back to the movie. (No, silly, the first movie, where the car was "Traveler."))
God. Must go study now.

I love that they did not tease with the deal in the previews only to have it mean something else in the show. I HATE when they do that--if they know that's what fans want to see, and set up the preview to pull the fans in, why disappoint them when they get there? But these folks are just so fannish. They get the contract. promise. deliver.
We didn't get the big reveal--and I find that I am glad, because it would have been too much when Dean was still suffering over knowing the truth he'd just guessed.
But they have put the promise out there. And we know they keep their promises. But how long until they are back?

yeah, the show is working with fan conventions rather than across them, which I'm thinking may be why it's so popular. It hits a lot of narrative kinks, and it doesn't lie about what it is.

Oh god, that was superb SPN.

I hope they've all been reading their Gaiman.

(The whole notion that the demons agree that Dean suffers beautifully did crack me up more than a little.)

That preview killed me. Lots and lots of guns! And, and, Dean! Telling Sam! Ohgod...
The flashback in this episode was so good that it kind of washed out most of the present-day stuff except for Dean's colloquy with the Devil. And the final scene...
Ohgod.
I think the devil's a liar, by the way, probably in that twisty way demons have. John's probably being forced to watch Dean being tempted and the screaming is him yelling at Dean to have some goddamned sense for once in his life and finish the goddamned ritual and send the devil back to hell, goddammit.
no subject
This is an extremely amusing thought, although really, I'm not sure -- I think John may well be suffering in Hell.
This show has just left me incoherent and flailing, all over again. That last scene... Oh, Dean.
no subject
John just might beat him to death, and if he didn't, Sam probably would. *sigh* I'm worried about Dean, because he really believes what John did was both wrong and unnatural, and now he's angry with John, too. He's just not going to accept it. And that's going to lead to awesome plot developments. *g*
no subject
I too am looking forward to the awesome plot developments!

But the stories open out with possibilities, so you are always left with lots of might-happen's that don't even require bending canon to work
no subject
Yes -- it's a surprisingly open narrative, despite the nearly claustrophobic focus on the two main characters. There's very little that's been ruled out absolutely, which makes it fun to play with.
