possibly the most "me" meme ever
As seen just now on
musesfool's livejournal:
Give me two characters from two different fandoms with which I am familiar, and I will invent a relationship for them. And if I'm not familiar with them, I will make something up. Hell, I'll make something up anyway, so...
This meme has "me" all over it. Seriously.

And I almost asked for Hermione as well, but I felt I was already stretching it requesting three characters. I remember that you'd planned a Parallel Catastrophes scene with Krycek and Hermione that you didn't get around to, and I'd looked forward to that. Still do. ;) *waits patiently*

Remember -- the whole thing goes AU in XF right after 2F/1S, which is when Hermione, Ron and Harry break Marita out of Fort Marlene. And I have no idea what the situation is with HP canon. It's post graduation, which ought to imply that Voldemort's been taken care of. But here you go; Hermione kind of took over:
Marita Covarrubias has a schedule: medicines in the morning, and every three hours afterwards. Viktor and Hermione take turns waking up in the night to dose her with the potions they spend the afternoon making. "Do you think they work?" Viktor asks her once, over the cauldrons.
"I'm not a mediwitch," Hermione snaps. "Mr. Parkinson says they will." She pushes her hair behind her ears and wishes she believed it; Alex's friend -- Draco's aunt, of all things -- is still as weak as she was ten days ago. They could keep giving her these medicines for weeks, as far as Hermione can see, all to no effect. She wishes there was someone who really understood the Black Oil. She really wishes they'd let her inspect a sample; there's a perfectly good potions lab in the basement of the safe house.
Three more days of potions and Miss Covarrubias is still flinching at anything brighter than a candle. Alex turns up that evening, driving up to the door in a battered Vauxhall; he looks thin and hunted when she opens the door for him, and even worse when he comes out of the bedroom. Down in the living room, his eyes flick from Hermione to Viktor. "It's all going to hell," he says, his voice cracking on the last word. "And why isn't anything helping her? What does Parkinson say?"
Viktor starts trying to explain what they're doing. Hermione can see that Alex neither understands nor cares. "Get me a sample of the Oil," she says abruptly. "Parkinson doesn't really know anything. If I had samples I might be able to come up with something better."
"Minotchka, no," Viktor says.
Hermione turns on him. "It's not too dangerous, Viktor. I know what I'm doing."
"You have no idea what you're asking," Alex says.
"I'll figure it out, then."
She has Alex's full attention. It's an uncomfortable experience: he looks too much like he wants to hit something. "Don't play with this stuff. Do you think you can help her?"
"I don't know," Hermione says. "Will you let me try?"
He runs his good hand through his hair, looks away. "I'll get you samples," he says. "It may take a few days."

I like how Hermione holds her own against Alex in this scene (I loved that in the fic as well). And just how well the two universes blend in your version, and it fills me with a sort of wistful glee seeing Viktor and Hermione with Alex because they are a little like Marita and Alex and yet so very very different, you know, in the general being-fucked-up department. :)
As for the story, I don't think it would be a lot of work to sort out that beginning and I totally think you should, and then post it. I'll get comments back to you very soon.

I tend to see 2F/1S at the point at which XF canon and I just have to part company. Nothing that happens after that has ever made much sense to me, and in pretty much all my imagined universes, Alex gets Marita out. Or Jeffrey does. Or someone. As you say, gah.
Hermione is fun to write.
