I did have a restful weekend, thank you, but I miss my lost hour. Getting out of bed this morning was rather painful.
Even without Alias, Sunday is the night of too much television--is anyone else watching Deadwood on HBO? I must admit that it's growing on me. Of course, every time I think "Wow, this is really good," I also think, "Yeah, but remember Carnivale, which also looked good three episodes in." Not--to clarify--that Carnivale was bad, but that it was needlessly confusing. I'm not a stupid person: if I don't understand a TV show, the problem isn't with me. At the moment, however, I feel hopeful: Deadwood has every indication of being a story, whereas even from the beginning Carnivale was at heart a Gnostic text.
But yes, now that I'm used to the profanity, I like Deadwood very much. The performances are stellar and the plotting (if predictable at times) is smooth. I'm especially interested, now that New York man has been killed, in the subplot of Laudanum Lady (sorry, I am hopeless at names!) and her surprisingly gold-filled claim. And I could watch Swearengen chew the scenery all day long, and am absolutely delighted to see him face competition that isn't terrified of him. The only character who's fallen flat for me is the marshall--sadly, the main character, but that's typical of me. B.H. predicts romance between him and Laudanum Lady. This will not make him more interesting, although it might give him something to do aside from attending funerals.
But the best thing last night was the Simpson's history of Henry the 8th. It's funny because it's true.
