Dear Scotswap Author
It's been so long since I did an exchange without an AO3 signup I thought I ought I write a letter for you! So here we go.
Here is what I've requested:
Characters: Marthe, Kate Somerville, Philippa Somerville, Richard Crawford, Jerott Blyth;
Relationships: Richard/Mariotta, Marthe/Jerott, Philippa/Diccon Chancellor, Marthe/any female character
In general I will be happy to receive pretty much anything for this fandom -- I have loved these books since I was a teenager, although I think I love them differently now than I did when I was 16 and besotted with Francis Crawford. In fact you will notice that I did not actually request a story about him -- it's because I am now, I think, more interested in the space he leaves behind and the way the other characters can exist in that space. In the books, characters are often defined and determined by their relationship to Francis. Who are they when he isn't there? So for example, Richard (whom I now really love) grows a great deal in the years that Francis is away -- and Jerott really doesn't. Tell me about that, for both of them!
I basically adore Kate and Philippa, and their relationship with each other, and I would love a scene between them, maybe when Philippa is still a shild, or maybe set after the end of the series. It's sort of heartbreaking to me, how alien Kate finds her own daughter by the end of the series, and I'd love to see them finding each other again.
Something I love for this fandom are canon-divergence stories -- what if things had gone differently. For me this very often means, what if Francis had died? So what if he had drowned on the way back from Russia, and Diccon Chancellor had lived: would their grief have brought him and Philippa together? What if Francis died at the end of Checkmate? How would Richard have coped? Or what if he had found out the truth of Sybilla's marriage? What if Gideon Somerville had lived (OK, that might not have changed anything much, but it would have made Kate, and thus me, happier.)
Or what if Marthe had just walked away from the Crawford Family Psychodrama? She gets such a terrible deal in canon, and she is one of my favorite characters, and my Marthe prompts pretty much boil down to: what if things went better for Marthe? Maybe she decides to stay in Istanbul or Greece as an antiques dealer. Maybe she persuades Jerott to stay with her, maybe not. Are they capable of creating a happy life together? I really have no idea, because Jerott is (and I say this with love) a moron, and Marthe actively rejects the possibility of happiness. Who is Marthe, when she isn't the tool of Francis Crawford's fate? Maybe she and Catherine d'Albon should just run away together, I don't know!
But I want to repeat that these prompts are highly optional, and I'm sure I will like anything you enjoy writing! We're all here because we love these books, and we're willing to take on the terrifying challenge of writing fanfic or making art for them.
Things I like include: enemies being forced to work together; competent characters doing what they're good at OR being forced outside their comfort zone; relationships between equal partners; happy or hopeful endings; canon-divergence AUs; character-driven stories and plots; crossovers; adventures, quests and other hijinks.
I DO NOT WANT: setting-change AUs; omegaverse, D/s and related dynamics; pet-play or age-play; humiliation; soulmate AUs; death for requested characters
(There is one exception to my setting-change DNW, and that's IN SPACE. I would read thousands and thousands of words of the LC in space.)
Thank you so much for writing for me! Have fun!
