I had thought, to be honest, that Sam saw the law as a set of tools, a way of doing things in the world. I mean, he grew up with men who used tools to fix things -- whether it's the car, or setting a ghost to rest, or killing some kind of monster. I think he walked away from the specific tools, but not from the general mindset.

But that's just my personal explanation -- I don't know how much evidence there is for it.
