Zoe is from Firefly, the series that Joss Weldon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) wrote and produced and that FOX cancelled after 13 episodes, and they did a spin off movie called "Serenity". The simplest (and not incorrect) way to explain it is that it's a Western in space. Both series and movie rocked.
This series is set post-movie, and you should really go find dvds of the series now, because there are some things of the movie you don't want to get spoiled for.
John Winchester is from Supernatural, which is also excellent, but in its own way. Two brothers travel America, looking for ghosts and other weirdness and their dad. John is the dad. Season 2 starts in September on the new CW. The plots are not as excellent as Firefly, but the atmosphere and character development is probably better.
