I, on the other hand, think it's fascinating that they're making the religious angle more easily viewed through the Cylon perspective, because it does all sorts of twisty things to the storyline and how we perceive it. It either changes the way the viewer looks at the Cylons, or it changes the way the viewer looks at Western religion, or possibly both. If, for example, the Cylons were polytheistic and the humans were monotheistic, it wouldn't work at all - it would be a Crusade, all right, but it wouldn't turn anybody's perceptions on their heads.
Admittedly, I am not as familiar as you are with polytheistic religions of Mediterranean origin, so I am not particularly bothered by its portrayal. (Am a bit puzzled on the Greek pantheon/signs of the Zodiac confluence, but I suspect this may demand more research on my part.)
