Actually, they're relationship is quite complex even without the romance. They're pseudo-siblings (unless they're revealed to be half or full siblings, which could still happen): Sark is the right-hand man of Sydney's mother, who Sydney hardly knows. So to her, he's the key to her mother, the protege, the person who takes the role which might have been Sydney's; and to him, she's the person who's first in Irina's affections, the favored child, and thus also in a role which might have been his. It's a bit like some the the treatments of Krycek/Mulder that you see.
