Primeval (and another thing)

I've never felt much interest in visiting Australia, but I sure wish I'd been there for the last few days.

I promised [personal profile] cofax7 that I would write about Primeval before the next episode, so here I am! One day to go!

I would have liked a proper reboot, as we had between S1 and S2, but am happy enough with this version so far -- at least Becker is getting to have a personality, if not a first name, and Lester still has all the best lines. Obviously I would be happy to have Danny (previously known in this journal as Stupid Former Cop) gone forever in the past, although I am sorry that Sarah got killed. (There are clearly a lot of good stories to be told about what happened between the seasons -- maybe more in the present than the past.)

But regarding the timey-wimey stuff -- the episode with Connor's friends and the dodos occurred in the S1 (non-ARC) timeline. But obviously something similar happened in this universe -- or, more likely, the writers have forgotten about the S1/2 reboot! I have always thought that there was a real difference between S1 Connor and S2&3 Connor, in only as a way of handwaving his sudden expertise in All Kinds of Science.

I have suddenly found myself warming to Connor and Abby -- I loved the moment when Connor woke to find her keeping watch on the balcony in London, and then took over for her. I liked that Connor never lost hope, while they were trapped in the past, and Abby did; that seemed right.

I'm not sure, if I had been plotting this out, that making the ARC even bigger would have been my first choice; it might have been interesting to have Abby and Connor return to a shambles, instead. That said, the new setup does obviously have some kind of story behind it -- whatever Philip Burton is up to, for one thing (something wicked, no doubt), and whatever Matt's story is. Matt seems OK so far, I guess -- I may have burnt all my dislike out on Danny -- but I would have preferred another scientist, which he does not seem to be. Where are the physicists in this setup? Where are the biologists? Perhaps Matt's mysterious friend will fill this gap? Because right now, they are set up for damage control, not research, and that seems unlikely.

For the record, if Philip Burton is in fact planning something nefarious, as he almost surely is, and if someone in the ARC is his mole, my money is on Jess. She's clearly evil: look at the way she sat down between Abby and Connor at the end of the two episodes!

Yeah, I think it's clear Burton is dirty: he's in PRIVATE INDUSTRY, which by definition is evil, esp. since he's basically that universe's Bill Gates.

I do want to know what Matt's story is, and how is it that he's been preparing for the ARC since it's only been around for 4-5 years.

Your favorite scene is my favorite scene: I loved the acknowledgement of culture shock and PTSD from Abby & Connor, and I hope for more. (I expect to be disappointed.)

I emigrated out to Australia 4 years ago in the middle of the 5-0 whitewash series..... not a fun time to be a Pom!
Yesterday more than made up for all the heart ache. I've been glued to the BBCs live text updates and I'm so so proud of what the team has achieved. Just wish I could have been in Sydney with the Barmy Army to see it happen live.
