This has been a day of false starts, but now that [livejournal.com profile] spican is back from her holiday, I decided to brush the edges of this and post it -- long ago, when I offered the sense of place stories, she requested Marita Covarrubias in Mexico. Here it is:

Sense of place challenge, 1

For [livejournal.com profile] kristen_k2, [livejournal.com profile] spican and [livejournal.com profile] muridae_x, Krycek in New Haven. I couldn't bring myself to send him to Yale, and I'd like [livejournal.com profile] spican to attest that I really can write Krycek stories that are not grim as death.

untitled x-files snippet, 925 words, PG-13 )

I wanted to put Dee in, just for Kristen, but this was a good end-point.

I'll figure out a title later on; this is (pretty obviously) without beta, and so please do point out errors or inconsistencies. And Krycek doesn't always know the name of things.

It looks like I'm going to have to write a massive crossover set in Terminal Three (scroll through the comments and you'll see what I mean). Maybe I should have offered to do O'Hare as well; I already have half a scene from an abandoned story set in Charles De Gaulle (worst airport ever) somewhere on my hardrive.

Writing challenge

One of the things that can make a fic stand out for me is a clear sense of place--the level of detail that moves a locale from generic to specific. And that's something that I have a lot of trouble with: I tend to indicate place with a few sketchy details, and I don't usually set stories in places where I've spent significant amounts of time. I want to try to do something about this, so I'm offering the following. Under the cuts are (first) a list of places I've lived, or spent enough time to find them familiar, and (second) a list of fandoms I write or would write. Pick a character, pick a location, and I'll try to write you a scene.

I figure that this will give me some structured writing to do over the vacation.
